The oboe is a woodwind instrument that originated in France in the seventeenth century. It has a double-reed (two pieces of cane) which vibrates to produce the sound. This instrument can be heard in orchestras and bands throughout the world as well as film scores and popular music. Beginning students will learn how to use proper breath support and a correct embouchure (formation of the mouth) to produce a good tone quality or sound. Beginning students will also establish a connection between written music, fingerings and pitches (musical sounds). More advanced students will gain knowledge of classical technique and repertoire (collections of well-known music) as well as learn the art of reed making.
